Finished 3'x4' Painting- Nature as Religion

Detail
Here is the finished/almost finished product of half a semester at Grad School. It is the largest I have done and is three feet by four feet in dimension.   It is a continuation of my exploration of the spirituality of nature. The skull has become a icon in my work that represents nature as a spiritual whole as "Nature," as in "God." The moon becomes a halo. This piece is reminiscent of a divine mirage one might experience after succumbing to the will of nature. The Joshua Trees are also important. They were given the name by Mormon settlers who thought that the trees looked like the Biblical Joshua praying to God with outstretched arms. In this piece they reach their branches to the sky, toward the Spirit of nature.
