Update on Iceberg

Here is what I have been working on people! It is almost done.

Raining Black Birds

Here is a quick shot of the black birds I have been working on. About half way there! Also in the bottom right hand corner is an illustration I am doing for a beer label.

The Last of the Icebergs

The beginning of a new painting featuring an iceberg. Recently watched a documentary on the state of the glaciers and the ice packs but have been wanting to do this painting for a while now.  My love of glaciers and their beautiful ancient blue ice make this painting a pleasure to work on for me.

New Work for a New Semester. Red-wing Blackbirds and Taniwha

I am painting  a flock of Red-wing Blackbirds each on their own panels. These were inspired by the strange events that happened mainly last year and parts of this new year, when thousands of birds fell dead from the sky.

This is my new 2'x6' oil on board painting. It is of a Taniwha Longfin Eel. A Taniwha is a guardian animal that protects natural resources in Maori culture. In freshwater it usually takes the body of an eel. To kill one brings bad luck and ultimately death. To see a Taniwha is a warning against whatever you are doing that may be endangering the eels or the environment. In this painting the eel is being killed which signifies the destruction of the environment and the death of the 'notion' or belief of the Taniwha.

Finished 3'x4' Painting- Nature as Religion

Detail
Here is the finished/almost finished product of half a semester at Grad School. It is the largest I have done and is three feet by four feet in dimension.   It is a continuation of my exploration of the spirituality of nature. The skull has become a icon in my work that represents nature as a spiritual whole as "Nature," as in "God." The moon becomes a halo. This piece is reminiscent of a divine mirage one might experience after succumbing to the will of nature. The Joshua Trees are also important. They were given the name by Mormon settlers who thought that the trees looked like the Biblical Joshua praying to God with outstretched arms. In this piece they reach their branches to the sky, toward the Spirit of nature.

Old Water Ski

This is a fun painting I have been working on when I have any downtime back in Petoskey. Its on an old water ski I found in a second hand shop.

The Religion of Nature- an exploration of sorts

My new painting I am working on in grad school. It is my largest yet, 3'x4.'
Still exploring my interest of skulls and having them represent "Nature" as a god not as 'n'ature as most people see it, small lower-case and unimportant.

Oil on Board, "Luna" 2010

This is Luna, she is a barred owl from the See North bird rescue program. When she was a baby her tree was cut down and she was the only survivor of her nest mates. She also lost an eye because of this. I painted her with her eye, however, as she would be if she was free and wild and her tree had never been destroyed.

30% of profits made from this painting will go toward the See North- Northwings Program to help raptors and owls who need assistance.  Prints are also available and 10% of each print sold will also go to See North's Northwings.
